• Realism 1st attempt

Hi guys, I prematurely attempted a realism portrait wish a graphite wash of hb and messed up on the base and had to erase it which seemed to just stick to the paper. I tried to recover it as best could but some things seem off. Help advise would be very appreciated.

          • Im certain I messed up on the gridding and proportions are a little off, I somehow got finger prints on the base that couldn’t be erased, blending was a real challenge and would love smoother transitions with the values. But im in the right place place I guess. Onwards and upwards lol

            • Its looking amazing the way you created dark shade with graphite

Sorry for the late reply 😊 I was busy with some website maintenance work.

First of all, for a first realism attempt, this is brave. You chose a challenging subject with dark lips, strong contrast, and liquid texture. That’s not easy. Respect for that.
The eyes are working well. They have depth and emotion. That’s the strongest part right now.
The main issue is value control. The dark areas, especially the lips and hair, went very dark very quickly. Next time, build your tones slowly in layers instead of starting heavy. That will give you more control and less need to erase.
Also, try to separate light, mid tone, and dark more clearly on the face before pushing the extreme blacks.
You didn’t mess it up. You experimented. That’s how realism is learned. Keep going.
