• What kind of paper should I use to draw extremely realistic portraits? I'm having a lot of trouble with sketchbook paper. Should I use smooth paper or slightly textured paper? I would be very grateful for your help.😊

      • Hi Mehmet, I personally like to use a ultra smooth bristol paper. The only downside I have seen is it’s very sensitive to pressure so keep in mind of anything you have to erase and your pencil marks. It is reasonably priced and you can get it at most hobby stores or on amazon. Hope this is hopefully to you.

Hey Mehmet! @christina gave you a very good suggestion. For realistic portraits, paper really matters more than people think. If the paper fights you, everything feels harder.

Go for smooth paper, always. It makes blending easier, skin looks cleaner, and details like pores and hair stay under control. Rough sketchbook paper usually causes patchy shading and grainy skin, which is probably what you’re feeling right now 👍For thickness, aim for around 180 to 250 GSM. Anything thinner gets damaged quickly. Anything in this range feels solid and forgiving.

Bristol Smooth paper is excellent for realism, especially around 200 to 250 GSM.

Strathmore Bristol Smooth 300 Series is very consistent and beginner friendly.

Fabriano Smooth papers are also great if you can find them.

Canson XL Bristol Smooth is a nice budget option for practice and finished drawings.

My biggest advice. Pick one smooth paper and stick with it for a while. Learning how one surface behaves will help you improve much faster than switching all the time ✏️ Once you change the paper, you’ll feel the difference immediately 🎨
