Best paper
I have just started the course and wanted to ask about paper. I have tried a few different ones slightly textured to extra smooth and I cant seem to get my blacks deep enough. I dont want to start a project and find it never looks right and I have overwork it. Can anyone help and tell me what paper you use that you found worked for you.

I have found that the Canson Bristol Vellum works best for me so far, but still slightly lighter than I would like (and then there is the little bit of graininess to deal with). I also would be interested in hearing other people’s suggestions…

i have used all sorts of paper and still struggle with the darks getting in there and erasing i think some of it is because we are beginners and i think we need to try and be more patient when drawing and build layers to get to darker tones and erasing i think trial and error different erasers do different jobs maybe try and leave the lighter area whiter is easier to erase .
but then i am like you just beginning my journey
some one said hot pressed water colour paper is good for drawing on but have yet to try this good luck with this and let us know how you get on please

you need to do many layers to build up the darker values. I’ve tried many paper and most are fine as long as they are thick enough, at least 150gsm. Smooth cartridge or bristol vellum are good but can be a bit pricy. You could also try “Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black”, they are a bit darker than other brands

Welcome to the course, John. Smart move asking about paper before you start a project.
Quick answers from the people above you. Debra’s Canson Bristol Vellum has enough tooth to actually hold graphite, which is why it goes darker than the extra smooth sheets you tried. Cheryl’s 150gsm rule is the one to remember, thick enough is most of the battle, and her Mars Lumograph Black tip pushes your darkest point a step further. rickie has the honest part, darks come from layers and patience, not the sheet.
You are in good hands here ❤️
So do not press harder, layer instead. 2B, then 4B, then 6B over the same area. The moment it looks shiny it is full, stop there or you burn the tooth you still need.
And do not judge your darks until the rest of the drawing is built. Dark gray next to a bright highlight reads almost black.
Grab one of those papers and start the project. Post it when it is done and we will look together.
