@alihaiderrehman hello Ali! I needed your advice about something. So it’s always easier to follow someone else’s exact drawing steps, shading, darkening and everything, but when i want to draw a portrait on my own it get really confusing, where to start , which pencil to use first .. how can i get better at this?

@sam-obeid90 I totally understand what you mean. Following a tutorial feels easier because every step is already decided for you. But when you sit down to draw on your own, suddenly the mind goes blank that’s completely normal, and every artist goes through this stage.
The best way to get better at drawing portraits independently is to work with a simple, repeatable structure:
Start with a very light outline using an H or HB pencil, just focusing on the big shapes. Don’t worry about details at all in the beginning. Once your proportions feel right, slowly move into shading. Think of shading as “big to small” start with soft mid tones using B or 2B, then build the darker areas gradually. Leave the highlights for last and carve them with your erasers. The biggest improvement comes when you stop rushing and start breaking the portrait into smaller, manageable steps instead of seeing it as one scary image. Best luck! 😊✏️1-
@alihaiderrehman Thank you so much, that’s really helpful. Appreciate the advice!

Samar this is so good! Honestly I’m really impressed with how clean and soft your fur looks. The flow, the direction, the contrast, everything is working beautifully here. And that butterfly is the perfect touch, it adds so much charm to the drawing.
For a first post after coming back to drawing, this is insanely strong. You’ve clearly kept your skills alive all these years, and now you’re growing even faster. I’m really happy you joined the community excited to see more of your journey! 😊🎨1-
@alihaiderrehman Thank you for your kind words! I followed your instructions the whole time. I did notice one thing though — when you use the Mono Zero, your highlights come out really white, but mine didn’t. I used the sand paper to sharpen the edges, but I think I just need more practice with this one.

@sam-obeid90 You’re doing great Samar! It all comes with practice. The Mono Zero gets sharper and brighter the more you get used to the pressure and angle. Keep going, you’re on the right track ✨
