I have already finished this before reading the comments/suggestions on the other thread. I ended up doing multiple layers and it got darker.
Trying with my new Neenah bristol vellum paper. It was very nice to draw on, I love the sound my pencils make when drawing on it but it’s not smooth. Apparently I need more layers according to my quick google search, bristol vellum works best with things require a lot of layers.

      • @cheryl don’t know about the bristol vellum paper but I think at some point you reached the right darkness. Not evenly distributed across the paper background. Looks like you were on a hurry. 🤣. More patience and finishing up with tissue. The containers I bought them on Temu or Ali under cosmetics. No cost at all for dozens of them. Otherwise very good looking drawing and droplets 💦. Happy you enjoyed the process and the sound of your pencils. Layers or layering are always 🗝️. I learned it the hard way. Starting over and over again. Anyway I like the leef and droplets. 👍

        • @pacific8118 Yes, it does seem I’m always in a hurry 😂 The uneven background is intentional. The reference has some lighter areas, but I think I didn’t do very well with that. https://academy.ahrstudios.com/reference-packs/184/

I will check out Aliexpress for those containers, I want to buy those grinder as well. I saw them but I thought they were for sharpening (thats what they said in the description)

I saw someone said bristol vellum is good for color pencil drawing because of the requirements of layering. I might try that next time, but I think I need to take a small break from drawing. I need to catch up on other tasks/projects. 😂 Drawing is too addictive for me.

        • Hi Cheryl

Your leaf and water droplets look absolutely beautiful. Your uneven background tends to compete with the leaf and water droplets And actually seem to diminish their impact.

I have recently been practicing making smooth backgrounds and I am happy with my results.

I take a regular kitchen knife and scoop up a little graphite powder on the tip and lightly tap the knife to gently scatter the graphite in the areas I want to shade, then take my 1” clean dry brush and gently tap the graphite until it is uniformly scattered around the area I want to shade. I then. Gently start brushing the graphite in a circular motion until I get the smoothness I am striving for and then smooth that out with a tissue.

I hope this is of value to you.😊

Cheryl! That droplet has a lovely roundness to it, and the leaf sits well in the space. I can see those layers building up. Bristol vellum is a fun paper to try out. You are right that it loves layers, though that slight tooth means it never goes fully smooth. The sound of pencil on paper is half the fun anyway. I love that you already know you rush. 😂 That self-awareness is worth a lot. Larry gave you a great background tip for next time, and I am glad you are willing to give it a go.
Enjoy your break, and come back whenever the addiction pulls you in. This is a really nice piece.

          Love
