I don’t really like this drawing because I wasn’t sure how to draw the dragonfly so that it would look realistic. It would have needed a lot more fine details, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to add them. How would you have drawn something like this?

      • Hi Martin, I usually use a reference image, better digital for zooming in purpose, and I study shades and gradients each part at a time…. I am not very good with drawing from imagination!!!

        • @NavalHawx hiiiii this was my reference but I dont know how I Need to draw that dragonfly to become realistic

          • @mART IMO, you did a good job on the hand, with the dragonfly, I would spend time studying the tones, I see 3-4 shades, dark black for background, lighter for the limbs, and bright areas for prominent areas getting light on… I always try to be gentle with my strokes, to avoid over doing anything !!!!

Martin, first of all, don’t be too hard on yourself. I actually think you’ve done a great job overall. Looking at the reference, the dragonfly itself doesn’t need a lot more detail. The biggest difference is actually the contrast. In the reference, the dragonfly is much darker in certain areas, which helps separate the body and wings from the finger. I would start by pushing the dark values a little more before adding extra details.
You could also add a few more fine veins in the wings and slightly sharpen the edges of the body, but keep them subtle. The dragonfly is so small that too much detail can quickly make it look busy.
Overall, I think you’re much closer than you think. A little more contrast and a few carefully placed details would make a big difference. Great work! 👏

          • @alihaiderrehman Hello Ali,

Thank you so much for your feedback. It really helps me a lot to keep improving and to notice the small mistakes that beginners often don’t see. 🙂

Contrast and values are definitely one of the hardest parts. I’m going to start my next drawing now, and I’ll pay special attention to the things I got wrong this time so I can improve.

            Best regards,
            Martin
