Before I discovered AHR, I bought Fun with a Pencil by Andrew Loomis. While flipping through it recently, I came across this early-stage drawing. I’m working on a portrait of my son, and I think I’m about halfway through. Right now, it’s still not a drawing I enjoy looking at… at this stage, all I can see are the mistakes and unfinished parts. But every time I work on it, it improves a little, gaining another layer and another detail. I hope that one day I’ll look back at this stage…

Started it today. Didn’t have a bigger paper so it’s 20cm x 30cm (2cm x 2cm squares). I feel the paper is a bit too thin ( Strathmore Sketch 300 series, 50lb. ), the guitar strings feel a bit ruined after the indention tool, but we shall see.
This is probably going to take at least a few days!

My favourite to use is the mitsubishi hi uni (top right), but my family members like the look of bottom left the most ( derwent academy, I enjoy using them the least)

Finished. My Niece named it Peaky Blinders a while ago, so I made it darker than the original to suit the title, but I like it and I already have a buyer. Today I managed to complete another one of Ali’s tutorials! I’m also testing some new pencils that don’t reflect light the way standard graphite pencils do, which really helps when taking photos of the finished drawing.

I chose this subject because of the character’s calm, reserved nature and her unmistakable gaze. While working on the drawing, I focused especially on the delicate details of the hair, and the subtle tonal transitions. Another study that was both a technical challenge and a pleasure to create.

I’m about halfway through this portrait. The hair took quite a bit of patience, especially creating the highlights by lifting graphite with an eraser. It was challenging, but I’m happy with how it’s turning out.
