• Walking stick

This is a drawing of a “Southern Double Striped Walking Stick”. I found one on my patio and took a few pictures of it, then enlarged the pictures and drew 1” grid over it and used it as my referance.

The body of the walking stick was 2” long and the body length in the drawing is 16” long. The paper I drew on is 18”x24”.

      • This is fantastic! Insects are such fascinating subjects because of all the incredible textures and tiny details, and you’ve captured them beautifully. Enlarging such a small creature into a large drawing really lets you appreciate how amazing nature is. I actually painted a wasp spider not long ago, and working on all those intricate patterns made me appreciate these little creatures even more. Beautiful work!

        • @SEDITH Thank you Sedith. This was a fun project.
I am going to start the “Blindfold woman” tomorrow.

          • @larry I’m really looking forward to seeing it! I think you’ll be the first person in the group to draw the Blindfold Woman, I haven’t seen anyone post that lesson yet, so I’m especially curious to see your interpretation. I’m planning to do the Elderly Portrait with Sunflower – Ethnic Bloom Series next. It looks like another wonderfully detailed project, and I can’t wait to get started. Good luck with the Blindfold Woman, I know it’s going to be another fantastic piece!

        • nice details!

          • @cheryl Thank you Cheryl. It is amazing to me to see how intricately involved these little insects really are.

You must have had incredible patience! Enlarging a 2-inch insect into a 16-inch drawing using the grid method is no small task. The amount of detail you’ve captured in the body segments, legs, and antennae is remarkable. It’s fascinating to see how something so tiny reveals such intricate textures when scaled up. Beautifully executed—thanks for sharing the finished artwork! 👏 Good luck with the drawing of the blindfolded lady @larry . Out of my reach. 😂

            • It’s so good, it made me cringe, like a lot of bugs do 😆

              • @Lori thank you Lori.
It was fun watching all of the little details come to life on paper, which you don’t get to see normally when you look at an insect in its normal size.

Larry, this is such a unique subject, and you’ve done a fantastic job with it! 😊 I really like how you captured the textures along the body. Those little patterns and the overall form make it feel very realistic. Choosing your own reference and using the grid method was a great approach.
If I could suggest one small improvement, I’d push the darkest values a little more in the shadows between the body segments and around the legs. That extra contrast would add even more depth and make the insect stand out beautifully. Overall, this is an excellent drawing. I always enjoy seeing you tackle unusual subjects. Keep up the amazing work! 👏

                • @alihaiderrehman Hi Ali, thank you for the great advice. I will make a copy of my drawing and experiment with the shadowing. This way I can see how much is to much or not enough.👍

You’re very welcome, Larry! 😊 That’s actually an excellent idea. Experimenting on a copy lets you try different values without worrying about the original. It’s one of the best ways to learn. Looking forward to seeing the results!
