Graphite powder
Hi, I’m brushing graphite powder with a 3B pencil like it says in the video, but the color is very light? Why is it? Is it the brush or paper?
The left is a screenshot from the video, which looks much darkerAnim, v and 9 others9 Comments-
Hi @cheryl , my two cents: I use very soft brushes, sometimes go softer ( higher B ) then suggested , can be the paper grain also and sometimes I even use Charcoal instead. Maybe this helps you in the right direction. Make some tries I would suggest.

@pacific8118 oh ok I thought I might need harder brushes so it can press harder into the paper.

@cheryl I agree with @larry I was forgotten the circular motion and the fact that you need to build up. Patience is indeed key. Other then that I make also my own powder but with pencils. I did buy a pencil Scraper and made powder that I keep in small containers. Ali made a video about that on YouTube. I’m not home anymore because of my surgery tomorrow otherwise would have make a photo. 😉

@pacific8118 Thanks. I saw those graphite powder containers in the video. I want to know where to get them 😂 I have a lot of extra pencils (that I bought to try) I could grind into powder

Hi Cheryl
It looks like you might need more graphite powder and then lightly brush it in with a lot of patience.
I have been using graphite sticks made by “Pacific Arc”. They come in various shades H and B and are 1/4”x1/4”x2-1/2” in size. I rub them on sand paper to make a powder, then sprinkle the powder on the background area and lightly brush in a circular pattern. I seems to work well for me.
The only problem that I have experienced with the process is learning to be patient.

@larry thanks for your suggestions! I definitely need more patience.

Hi Cheryl
Ali has an excellent tutorial section, building soft evenly textured background on the “Blindfolded Woman portrait”.
It starts at 1 hour, 37 min. and 37 sec. into the tutorial. It is about 15 min. long.-
thank you!
