• Recent Portrait Drawing

Here is a recent drawing I did of my grandmother. I am pretty happy with the result but I am wondering if there are some improvements that can be made. I’ve been drawing portraits for 6 years now and although I haven’t officially started the drawing course yet I have gone through a good amount of the lessons and applied a few of the techniques to my recnt drawing. I tried to push the darks and make sure there is enough contrast. I’m quite slow at drawing so this took me roughly 16 hours I believe

      • I wouldn’t say 16h for this is slow

        • Thank you, I wasn’t sure 😅

Ryan, you should be very proud of this portrait of your grandmother. Sixteen hours is not slow at all, especially when you are taking the time to build the tones carefully and make decisions about the contrast. You have done a great job pushing the darks, and the features and hair have a convincing sense of form. As you continue, keep exploring softer transitions in the lighter areas so the shadows move gradually into the highlights while still keeping the structure of the face. The time and care you put into this drawing really show in the result. Beautiful work! 👏
