• Venus in the darkness

Graphite study inspired by the famous Venus of Willendorf, now housed in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien in Vienna. Dating back nearly 29,500 years, the small limestone figure remains one of the most iconic artworks of prehistoric humanity.

Surrounded by darkness, illuminated on all sides, and viewable from every angle, the figure appears almost suspended in space. This drawing focuses on that atmosphere.

        • @larry Hi Larry, thank you. A few weeks ago I saw the sculpture in the museum and took many photos of it because I would love to recreate this little sculpture in clay. I’d like to show you the image that I am using as a reference for this drawing. I was really inspired by the piece.

        • That sounds exciting. I would like to see your clay recreation. You could even go a little further and have it recreated in bronze.👍

                  Beautiful work, Edit!

The atmosphere you’ve created is fantastic. The contrast between the illuminated figure and the dark background really makes it feel suspended in space, just as you described. I also love that this piece was inspired by a sculpture you saw in person. That personal connection often leads to the most meaningful artwork.👍
