I like the fractured look you have created to the overall drawing. I do think detailed attention to the iris and pupil would be a win win.👍

              • I’m currently struggling with the edges and transitions from dark to light in my drawings. I find it difficult to achieve smooth, natural gradients without them looking patchy or uneven. How can I improve these transitions and make them appear more seamless and realistic? I would truly appreciate any advice or guidance — I’m grateful for every tip.

                • Hi Hermann I would recommend reviewing lesson 15 in the Master Drawing Class specifically regarding gradients. This will show you how to gradually and smoothly transition from one value to another

                • Also there are lessons later that discuss portraits, facial features and hair and how to render/shade them

                  • Hi Hermann

Lens is exactly right. You can also go to the Academy course, “Pencil Drawing Masterclass”. If you start at the beginning you will learn all of the technical skills you will need to become a good, possibly a great artist.

                  • I would definitely practice with a bunch of rough drafts and practice pencil control with dark to light lines. And practice tice with basic shapes just to get the feel of things. But your definitely on your way to greatness keep it up and dont be too hard on yourself!!

                  • Hermann, in my limited experience, id probably say there isn’t enough contrast in values. It could be because your reference photo doesn’t contain enough shadows. I always either use a reference that has the darkest value and the lightest value so I can get good contrast which helps with depth. You could always alter the ref image, by editing…

Hey Hermann, John already gave you some solid advice 👍 I’d add that you should try increasing the contrast a bit. Also, focus first on building a strong foundation get the outlines and proportions right before going deeper into shading. You’ll feel a big difference once that base is solid ✏️😊

Hermann, you are definitely making progress 😊
Portraits are not easy, and the fact that you’re staying with it is already a big win. There are good things happening here. The eyes have expression, and you’re beginning to understand the overall head structure. That shows improved observation and awareness compared to earlier attempts.

                    Hey Hermann 😊
You’re right and good eye catching that. The nose feels flat because the mid tones are missing. Try softening the bridge edges and add a gentle shadow under the nose wings instead of outlining them. Also darken the nostril core just a bit for depth 👍
Overall the eyes and lips are strong. Fixing those nose values will push the… Read more

                  • Hey guys, what do you think about this? Do I need to make the shading even darker? I’m afraid that I won’t be able to get smooth transitions if I do… Around the eyes and the nose I shaded in layers, but somehow everything still looks so flat. What am I doing wrong here?

Hermann you’re not doing anything “wrong” here. You’re actually on the right track. The reason it feels flat is not because you need to go darker everywhere but because the shading doesn’t have enough difference between the darkest and lightest areas. Right now most of the tones are sitting in the same range so everything blends… Read more

                    • I m frustrated — I just can’t get shading right. No matter what videos I watch or what technique I try, it always turns out ugly… I draw everything freehand. I’m using Canson XL Bristol 180gsm paper, which was recommended to me by a lady from this community.

Hi Hermann, I get how frustrating this stage can feel. Shading is one of those things that refuses to improve overnight, and it’s completely normal to struggle with it in the beginning. The good news is that nothing in your work shows a lack of talent. What you’re missing right now are just the basics of value control and pressure control, and… Read more

That’s a solid quick sketch, Hermann! The structure of the shark is great especially the form and flow of the body. The contrast between light and dark tones gives it a lot of power, even though it’s a quick piece. If you ever revisit it, try softening the background a little more to make the shark stand out even stronger. Really nice energy… Read more

                    • Hey guys, I’ve got a problem with my shading. First I drew my base layer with an HB pencil, then I added the darker shading on the nose and cheeks with a 4HB. Even though I blended everything with a cotton swab, it still looks really blotchy. How can I fix this so it becomes smooth and even? I don’t really understand what I’m doing wrong.

                      • Hello there, probably our experts could comment fairly, but I want to know do you use a reference image? Your outlines are not aligned,

I can’t imagine and draw especially the shades. The shades provide a distance perspective, thus creating the 3D feel to it.

Hey Hermann, thanks for sharing your drawing and honestly, it’s great that you’re paying attention to the shading issues. That awareness already puts you ahead of most beginners.
So here’s what’s really happening, in a simple and friendly way. Your shading is struggling because the layers aren’t building up smoothly. You start with an HB… Read more

I’ve only been drawing for three weeks, so I still have a lot to learn, but I’m addicted to getting better – especially when it comes to proportions and shading, the most important parts.

You started drawing three weeks ago? Why on earth would you make it so difficult for yourself by drawing a human face 😱🫢

I’m not judging you in any way by the way! I also started with a human eye and the next step was drawing an advanced portrait of a girl with water on her face. I even was disappointed that it didn’t look that well…
