• I tried to go darker, but no matter how many times I go over the paper with my charcoal pencil, it just doesn’t work. When I go over the black with my brush, it actually gets lighter… I need to try a different technique. Do you have any ideas?

      • Dear Martin, I am also a new student, I has similar experience, what I did with the blending is, go extremely light and slow gradually increase pressure ,covering small areas at a time, see if that will help.

      • Hi Martin, that is looking pretty good. You might try using graphite powder on the back ground and on the face itself.

The “Elderly Old Man” exercise shows great ways to use graphite powder. I used 8B powder and it really worked good. Ali shows several ways to use the graphite powder through out the whole exercise, and they all worked wonderfully.

You can find the “Elderly Old Man Portrait” in your “HOME” section under “Your Courses and Libraries” then scroll to the bottom. There you will find a two part exercise. It is long but chucked full of great methods to hone your artistic skills.

          • @larry Thanks for the tip about the video — I’ll give the 8B powder a try. I think I need to build up more layers, because that’s probably why it’s not getting dark enough.

            • @annejoke Hi, I’m using some decent 180gsm Bristol paper, but I’m going to try powder and build up more layers — I think that’s probably the mistake. But thank you… I guess creepy is a compliment 😂

            • keep it up looks like you going in the right direction although i am pretty new to this not at that point yet

              🙂

              Hi Martin 😊
I see the issue. Your paper is getting saturated, so adding more charcoal won’t go darker.
Try this. Build your darks in layers, but stop blending too much with the brush. The brush lifts graphite and charcoal, which is why it looks lighter.
Instead, press slightly more in the final layers and use a sharper pencil for deeper darks.
You’re very close, just adjust the technique 👍🔥

              • @Biba Hello Biba, I’m really happy that the comments were able to help you. I’ve found my biggest problem that was causing my tones not to be very dark and my shading to look uneven. It all came down to the paper I was always drawing on a rough surface, which isn’t ideal 🙂

Try using a smoother surface; it makes a huge difference.

                Best regards,

                Martin
