There are still so many things I need to improve… What does hyper-realistic actually mean? Is my drawing heading in the right direction? What else do I need to improve to make it look truly realistic? I appreciate every piece of criticism. Thank you.

      • Hi Martin

Is this one of Ali’s exercises? I f so, I would say watch the exercise again and see what you might have missed. I think your drawing is very good but could use some detailed refinement. When I watch Ali’s exercises I try to copy every stroke he makes, and listen intently to every word he speaks. Sometimes I watch the exercise over and over until I feel what he is describing finally sinks into my brain.😊

        • @larry Hello Larry, no, it’s a picture from Pinterest and I tried to draw it exactly like in my reference picture, but you’re right maybe I should redraw the exact same drawing as Ali and copy everything exactly the way he did it. Thank you for your tips, they are very helpful.
          Best regards,
          Martin

        • Ja Larry heeft gelijk je tekening is goed maar mist de afwerking Martin!

          • @annejoke Dankjewel Annemie, maar precies dat is het punt: ik weet niet precies wat ik verder moet uitwerken zodat het realistisch oogt.

          • Really good martin 😍

          • This is such a striking and imaginative piece.
What especially caught my attention is the cracked texture on the shoulder and the palette-knife-like marks. I actually zoomed in to study them and try to figure out how you created those effects.
The composition, the dramatic lighting, and those haunting eyes all work beautifully together. 👏

            • @SEDITH Thank you so, so much, Edit. But somehow I still feel like something is missing realism is really hard to achieve. I don’t exactly know what’s missing, but it was a lot of work.

I added all the details with charcoal pencils first, then blended everything with a brush, and afterwards erased some highlights and details back into it. It was a lot of fun, but definitely hard work 😂

              Thanks again for your compliment!

              • @mART Honestly, I don’t see any obvious flaws in it. The piece is beautifully developed, and the details guide the viewer’s eye naturally through the composition. The dark values are strong and confident, while the highlights stand out beautifully and create great depth.
Because the subject is fantasy-based, I don’t think it needs to be judged too strictly by anatomical realism. The face comes together very well, and there isn’t any area that feels distracting or out of place. To me, it looks cohesive and convincing as a whole.
And yes, I know exactly what you mean. I often feel the same way about my own work. Right now I’m working on a small prehistoric stone figurine, and I’m still struggling with how to convincingly capture the surface and material of a 30,000-year-old sculpture in a drawing.

                • @SEDITH Thank you so much for your detailed explanation 🙂 I’m very excited about your drawing definitely let me see it, I’m really excited and looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to your work.

                  Best regards,
                  Martin

              • Hi Martin

I haven’t read the other comments so maybe I’m telling you something you already know. Sorry.

Hyper realism is when the contrast is very high in the details of the drawing. For example: add more darkness to the lips on your drawing underneath the white areas. Then add some (skin)lines above the white part of the lip.

If you have done that look at the drawing from a distance. What do you see?

Another example: the white hairs are good but they can be ‘sharper’. Try to erase the hair lines again to make them more white. If you do that the contrast will be bigger and it will look more realistic.

The base of your drawing is done. It only needs more detail.

                • @Art_by_Nicole Hello Nicole, thank you very much for your explanation. It helps me a lot to keep improving and moving forward. What I only noticed afterwards is that I didn’t draw the nose very wellthe angle is wrong, and so is the shading. But that’s okay, you never stop learning. 😁

Martin, you’re definitely heading in the right direction. What stands out most is that you’re already thinking critically about your work, and that’s a huge part of improving. This piece has a strong atmosphere, good contrast, and a creative concept. To push it further toward realism, I would focus on smoother value transitions in some areas of the face and pay close attention to subtle edge variations. Hyperrealism is often less about adding more detail and more about accurately controlling values, edges, textures, and proportions.
Keep studying from references and keep challenging yourself with projects like this. You’re making solid progress, and I’d be proud to see this posted in the community. 👍
