Jason, first of all, congratulations on completing your very first portrait! Portraits are one of the most challenging subjects to draw, and you’ve already captured Marilyn’s iconic pose and expression, which is a huge achievement. Finishing a portrait like this gives you experience that every future drawing will build on, so you should definitely be proud of it.
For your next one, I’d focus on three areas. First, strengthen your values by pushing the darkest darks a little more, especially around the eyes, lips, hair, and under the chin. This will make the portrait feel much more three dimensional. Second, soften some of the transitions in the skin so the face looks smoother and more natural. Finally, spend a little more time refining the proportions, particularly around the eyes and mouth, as small adjustments there can make a big difference to the likeness.
This is a fantastic first portrait, Jason. Keep practicing and don’t compare this to professional work. Compare it to your next drawing. I have no doubt you’ll see a big improvement very quickly. Keep it up! 👏
