• Took me all day to lay down this shading with a brush and it’s going to have to be done 2 more times to get it jet black, but that comes later, will be shading the horses head tomorrow if I get time, as the wife always needs something doing, I’ve told her she doesn’t have to remind me every 6 months

      • It already sounds like the horse portrait is getting the full professional treatment. And I had to laugh at the part about your wife. 😂
The brush shading is looking great already, and I know exactly what you mean about building up those deep blacks. I’ve actually become quite addicted to using a 14B pencil for backgrounds. When a drawing starts looking a bit too gray, I often reach for it and start pushing the dark values much further. It takes forever, but the final contrast is always worth it.
Looking forward to seeing the horse take shape tomorrow…

        • @SEDITH I’ve got a box of 12B pencils, but now you mention it, I think I have a 14B somewhere also, must check.

Looking great, Ronald! 😊 That background is already starting to create a nice contrast with the horse, and those extra layers will make the black even richer. Take your time with it. Keep us updated! 👍
