    Another one done!
The scan version looks lower in contrast for some reason but the photographed version has phone shadow on it 😢

Your drawing looks great. Try laying your drawing on the floor near an outside window to photograph. You will get good lighting and it is easy to eliminate shadows.

Cheryl, congratulations on finishing another drawing! The droplet has a beautiful shine, and I can see why the photographed version shows the contrast better. Larry’s suggestion about placing it near an outside window is a good one. It should give you more even light and help avoid the phone shadow. Great work! 👏

          First Solo Piece 🖤

I found a reference online and wanted to challenge myself to work through it on my own and really focus on understanding the tones and values instead of just following along with a drawing. I still have things I want to work on, but I’m really proud that I actually trusted myself enough to try this one independently.

          And seriously, thank you Ali…

          Recent Portrait Drawing

Here is a recent drawing I did of my grandmother. I am pretty happy with the result but I am wondering if there are some improvements that can be made. I’ve been drawing portraits for 6 years now and although I haven’t officially started the drawing course yet I have gone through a good amount of the lessons and applied a few of the techniques…

          • I wouldn’t say 16h for this is slow

            • Thank you, I wasn’t sure 😅

              • Ali

Ryan, you should be very proud of this portrait of your grandmother. Sixteen hours is not slow at all, especially when you are taking the time to build the tones carefully and make decisions about the contrast. You have done a great job pushing the darks, and the features and hair have a convincing sense of form. As you continue, keep… Read more

finally got around to the hair section, first two looks ok to me the 3rd and 4th ones look a bit hit and miss.

looks like unkept and messing hair

                • Hi Tony

Drawing hair well, takes a lot of practice. You have a very good start. You will find that every hair drawing you make will be better than the last. Ali has some great tutorials on drawing hair. 👍

Anthony, nice work getting through the hair section. The straight and wavy hair are reading well. For the messier styles, try grouping the hair into a few larger shapes first, then add only a few loose strands on top. That should help them feel less tangled. Hair takes plenty of practice, so have another go when you can. You’re off to a good start.

Very good start. You might check your eyes and cheeks against your grid reference. They seem to be off just a tad. Some times it helps to make your grids around critical areas like the eyes, half the size of the regular grid size, so you have more control of details. I have done that myself, and it helped a lot in getting…

                              Wood Texture

Slowly getting more comfortable with going darker with the shading. Using the eraser is still challenging. I had issues shaving it to get a better edge.

Your wood texturing looks great. Your contrast in values is wonderful.

It takes a bit of practice to conquer the use of the Mono Zero eraser, but once you do, it becomes a very valuable artistic tool.😊

Lori, this is a strong study. I can see why you’re feeling more comfortable going darker because the contrast is doing a lot of good work here. The Mono Zero takes a bit of practice, but the lighter marks you’ve lifted are already helping to describe the wood grain. Keep at it!

                                  Project #3

I’m really enjoying the process & seeing myself grow! This was also my 1st real attempt at hair. It was certainly the most challenging part for me.
Ali, I took your advice & tried to soften my transitions. Your thoughts & expertise is always welcome!

It looks a little blurry here, but if you click on it, it’s clear.
