Hey Geetesh, this is so good! I’ll suggest you smooth those darker areas so they blend cleanly into the light. The portrait already has a lovely softness – pushing that blending a bit further will make it even more seamless.

    Donut

I guess my break didn’t last long 😂
I’m a bit disappointed with the end product. I think I messed a few things up here especially the white colors on top of the chocolate, but still a good practice I guess.

Your donut looks great. I challenge you to draw it again and post the two drawings side by side.😁

        • I think I used a white pencil instead of a blending pencil. It looks like a white pencil in the video.

          • Ali

Welcome back, Cheryl! 😊 And I’m sorry I missed a few posts. I’m really glad I finally caught this one! You’ve done a lovely job here. The chocolate looks glossy, and the caramel drips have a really nice sense of thickness and shine. The white highlights can be tricky, but you’ve captured the overall look beautifully. It’s great to have you… Read more

            Sketching Pear with Shapes

I got a bit difficult when make stippling texture. I had blend with paper stump but the shadow doesn’t look good. Do I push to hard or my paper or Pencil ? I used 110 gsm paper with 4B faber Castell Pencil. Need Suggestion thanks 😂🙏

Frenky, this is a really good attempt! 😊 Your stippling is already giving the pears a nice texture and volume. For the shadow, I wouldn’t push harder with the pencil. With 110 GSM paper, heavy pressure can make the surface harder to blend. Try building the shadow gradually with lighter layers and use the stump gently rather than pressing into… Read more

Hi! My name is Debra and I am new to the community. So far I have enjoyed seeing all of your drawings. Have been kind of intimidated to share mine, there are so many good artists out there… I really enjoyed the cherries drawing and it was the first time using indentation tools, so I have decided to share it. Let me know if you have…

            • Welcome! The cherries look nice. About the eraser, I think you will improve with more practice. I had the same issue when I started the course now I feel I have more control with the eraser.

You can make it flat with sandpaper, then use the edge to make sharp lines. Or you can use an electric eraser grind it on sandpaper with an angle, then…

            • Hi Deb, Welcome to the community.

Your cherries look very good and the leaf has very good detail. The only suggestions I might have is to make the cherries and the leaf darker with more contrast in values. Also make the edges of the cherries a little crisper.

Cheryl is right about the erasers. You can also cut a slight bit of the tip of the…

Welcome Debra! So glad you decided to share – those cherries look lovely, and the indentation highlights give them a nice glossy feel. Do not let the talent around you intimidate you – everyone started somewhere, and posting your work is the best way to grow.

Cheryl and Larry already gave you excellent advice on the mono eraser – the… Read more

Still Life with Grid - Challenging

Starting to get the hang of using a grid. I’m still struggling with the values and smoothing stuff out. My transitions seem so harsh. I do need to invest in some better paper. What I’m using isn’t taking the multiple layers too well and it doesn’t blend as good as I would like.

                • I use a heavier Mixed Media paper from Hobby Lobby I have grown to love. It works really well for blending.

                • Paper can definitely have a huge effect. What paper did you use for this?
Depends on your budget, I initially did my practice with normal 80gsm printing paper and found them ok. Or you can get some 120-200 gsm printing paper.
If cost is not an issue you can look at bristol smooth or mixed media, something 200 gsm+

                • Hi Lori

Your drawing shows you are learning a lot. Your background and shadow are drawn very well and smooth. I think if you draw this exercise again and listen to every word Ali has to say and watch every stroke of the pencil he makes in the tutorial, you will find the results you are happy with.

It looks like you might be pressing to hard…

Hey Lori! I can see the grid is helping you lock in the shape. That teapot looks solid, and your background shadow has a nice soft feel to it.
You already diagnosed the problem yourself the paper is fighting you. When the surface will not hold layers, everything gets harder. You start pressing harder without noticing, and those transitions… Read more

Hey Frenky! Yes, absolutely. The drawings you create are yours, and you are totally free to post them wherever you like. Instagram, Facebook, anywhere.
In fact, I love when students share their work out in the world. It shows people what is possible when you put in the time and practice. If you feel like tagging the Studio or mentioning where… Read more

                • I feel that’s the best way to learn! Even if the lesson feels too easy or too difficult there’s nothing to lose by practicing the fundamentals or pushing yourself outside your comfort zone

                  • @brederodesabine1_trs yes I am , now I draw every lesson from the course 😆

                    • Hi Sabine

That is a great question. If you start at the beginning of the “Pencil Drawing Masterclass, you will learn all the fundamentals to become an excellent artist. The tutorials are designed to build a strong foundation for drawing. Each lesson prepares you for the next lesson.

If you skip around on the lessons, you will find out later on…

Sabine, yes. Draw every lesson if you can, but here is the part that makes it count: do not worry about making it perfect. Worry about noticing. Ask yourself what feels different this time. Is your shading smoother? Are you seeing shapes instead of symbols? That noticing is where the real learning lives.

Ryan and larry already said the good… Read more
