Paper Questions
1. Toned Paper
I found quite a few tutorials use toned paper. How will they go on plain paper? Toned paper is quite expensive here and not sure if I’m ready to draw on them.2. Neenah Vellum Bristol Cardstock
“LIGHTWEIGHT WHITE CARDSTOCK: Vellum Bristol cardstock offers a slightly textured, toothy surface making it ideal for lightweight…

Can’t really help you @cheryl . I tried once gray toned paper from Clairefontaine 180gsm to color pencil draw a fried egg and turn out that I couldn’t handle the paper with standard colored pencils. Didn’t have the polychromos. Couldn’t build layers. Somebody here on the forum even suggested me to use POSCA pencils ( Acrylic) for more…

Hi Cheryl 😊
Great questions! You can absolutely create beautiful graphite drawings on plain white paper, so don’t feel like you need toned paper to achieve realistic results. Toned paper is simply another option and is often used when artists want to work with both dark and white media. Between the two Neenah papers, I would choose the… Read more1- View 2 replies

It was nice using shapes to construct the pears instead of the grid method. The little spots/dots/points took forever 😊

Well done, like the cast shadows….

Nice work! Those spots looks like they require a lot of patience

Deze vind ik heel goed gedaan👌

Personally I like them very much and just like you I often go and start with geometric shapes instead of the grid method. I just eyeball the proportions or use a ruler. Just my way of doing things……I haven’t yet been as far into the Graphite pencil course where Ali explains the grid method. Maybe that this will change my way of doing things…….

Graphite pencil Course Final Portrait
Hi all, finally finished the whole course, this is the final protrait and a few extra photos to show the progression.
I lost patience in the end for a lot of details and I think the fixative spray ruined a few places (maybe I sprayed too much…)
I’m quite happy with the result and learnt a lot during the process.View more comments-
Well done. I don’t know when i will get to this project, but it makes me nervous and excited at the same time. It looks real. I don’t know the reference pic, so i don’t know whether the difference in eye shading is on the reference, but as a complete novice that is the only part of the pic I was wondering about. Well done 👏🏼 I hope I will be…

Cheryl, congratulations on finishing the entire course! 🎉😊
Looking through your progress photos is honestly one of my favorite parts. It’s amazing to see how the portrait gradually came to life, layer by layer. The final result is something you should be very proud of. The eyes are especially striking, and the values throughout the face create… Read more1- View 2 replies

Seems like a challenging subject indeed, but you’ve handled it very well. Personally don’t see a lot of mistakes besides the fact that your grid is showing trough. IMHO.

This is a beautiful study of form and light. The transitions are very soft and controlled, which gives the teapot a convincing three-dimensional appearance. Very clean, very subtle, and very well executed. 🤩

great job Michelle👍

Michelle, this is looking really good! I know this subject can be challenging because the smooth curves leave very little room for error, but you’ve done a great job. The soft value transitions give the teapot a nice rounded form, and the overall proportions look solid. The best part is exactly what you said. You’re learning as you go.… Read more

I absolutely love minimalist drawings like this. With only a few carefully placed lines and highlights, you’ve managed to capture the entire character of the guitar. A wonderful example of how sometimes less truly is more. 👏

nice amazing what can be done with so little and still looks lovely

Abbasi, I absolutely love this minimalist approach. 😊 With just a few carefully placed highlights, you’ve made the guitar instantly recognizable. It takes confidence to leave so much in shadow, and you’ve balanced the light beautifully. This is a great example of how powerful simplicity can be. Fantastic work. It has a really elegant and… Read more

I never thought this would be the hardest project I’ve done. My shading skills were really put to the test. I wanted to push the contrast more, but I got too tired making all the dots and black circles. 😅 I’ll just carry the lessons I’ve learned and move forward. 💪

Kim, I think this project taught you exactly what it was supposed to teach. 😊
The values and shading are much stronger than in your earlier work, and the profile reads very well. The curls, facial planes, and subtle transitions show a lot of patience and observation. And yes, those dots can definitely test a person’s determination! 😄 What… Read more- View 1 reply
