Cherry
I think the cherry is not dark enough compared to the reference.

Hoi Cheryl, inderdaad, je kers ziet er heel echt uit maar de kleur is idd wat flets, dat kan zo opgelost worden toch😋

Wacht even af wat Ali ervan zegt!

Cheryl, the roundness and form on these cherries is already working nicely, and those stems have a great natural curve. So don’t stress too much about the value match just yet. The structure reads well and that’s the harder part.
If you do want to push the darkness, try layering a dark red or burgundy first, then use black only in the… Read more

Very nice cherry. Are you going to draw another cherry and post the two together?- View 1 reply

Donut
I guess my break didn’t last long 😂
I’m a bit disappointed with the end product. I think I messed a few things up here especially the white colors on top of the chocolate, but still a good practice I guess.-
Hi Cheryl
Your donut looks great. I challenge you to draw it again and post the two drawings side by side.😁

very good Cheryl be god to see 2 side by side from same hand 👏

Nice Cheryl , it looks like a real donut 👏

I think I used a white pencil instead of a blending pencil. It looks like a white pencil in the video.

Welcome back, Cheryl! 😊 And I’m sorry I missed a few posts. I’m really glad I finally caught this one! You’ve done a lovely job here. The chocolate looks glossy, and the caramel drips have a really nice sense of thickness and shine. The white highlights can be tricky, but you’ve captured the overall look beautifully. It’s great to have you… Read more

Leaf
I have already finished this before reading the comments/suggestions on the other thread. I ended up doing multiple layers and it got darker.
Trying with my new Neenah bristol vellum paper. It was very nice to draw on, I love the sound my pencils make when drawing on it but it’s not smooth. Apparently I need more layers according to my…-
@cheryl don’t know about the bristol vellum paper but I think at some point you reached the right darkness. Not evenly distributed across the paper background. Looks like you were on a hurry. 🤣. More patience and finishing up with tissue. The containers I bought them on Temu or Ali under cosmetics. No cost at all for dozens of them. Otherwise… Read more

Hi Cheryl
Your leaf and water droplets look absolutely beautiful. Your uneven background tends to compete with the leaf and water droplets And actually seem to diminish their impact.
I have recently been practicing making smooth backgrounds and I am happy with my results.
I take a regular kitchen knife and scoop up a little graphite powder on…

Cheryl! That droplet has a lovely roundness to it, and the leaf sits well in the space. I can see those layers building up. Bristol vellum is a fun paper to try out. You are right that it loves layers, though that slight tooth means it never goes fully smooth. The sound of pencil on paper is half the fun anyway. I love that you already know… Read more

Graphite powder
Hi, I’m brushing graphite powder with a 3B pencil like it says in the video, but the color is very light? Why is it? Is it the brush or paper?
The left is a screenshot from the video, which looks much darker-
Hi @cheryl , my two cents: I use very soft brushes, sometimes go softer ( higher B ) then suggested , can be the paper grain also and sometimes I even use Charcoal instead. Maybe this helps you in the right direction. Make some tries I would suggest.

Hi Cheryl
It looks like you might need more graphite powder and then lightly brush it in with a lot of patience.
I have been using graphite sticks made by “Pacific Arc”. They come in various shades H and B and are 1/4”x1/4”x2-1/2” in size. I rub them on sand paper to make a powder, then sprinkle the powder on the background area and lightly…

Hi Cheryl
Ali has an excellent tutorial section, building soft evenly textured background on the “Blindfolded Woman portrait”.
It starts at 1 hour, 37 min. and 37 sec. into the tutorial. It is about 15 min. long.- View 1 reply

chilli again
Trying this again with my new pencils and paper, I’m not sure if it produce much better results proportional to the price difference but definitely a lot nicer to use and blends a lot easier. A lot less effort and strain on my wrist to put colors on.
I didn’t follow the tutorial this time, it could probably use some darker shades in…

Wow! What a difference. Your new pepper looks so rich and vibrant. 🎶. What pencils did you use this time?

I guess the polychromos. Very nice pepper. Tasty looking. @cheryl

Hey Cheryl, this is a really useful side by side. You can clearly see how much richer and smoother the new one looks.
You are absolutely right about the materials making a difference. Better paper and Polychromos really do blend more smoothly and take less effort to lay down. Your wrist will thank you.
And yes, pushing some darker shades in… Read more

Wine Glass
I almost gave up on this. I didn’t have a good start, but I think it turned out ok.
I didn’t use a grid and the glass is a lot wider than the reference.
Used Faber Castell Black Edition pencils + gelly roll-
@cheryl You still amaze me with your ideas and drawings. 👏

Apple
Followed a tutorial but not too happy with it 😂 Not being too hard on myself. But I like criticizing my work so I can improve in future.
There a lot of empty spaces if you zoom in. I think it’s because I didn’t use a brush or tissue. The tutorial was using prismacolor and didn’t do it. It could also be paper issue. I was only using normal…-
@cheryl Don’t be so hard on yourself. I find it very well done and tasty 😋. The colors are not off in my opinion. A great looking apple. 👏

Hi Cheryl
Your apple looks delicious. Your analysis of your drawing is probably very accurate. I think a smoother paper and a little brushing would make the colors glow and smooth them out a bit also. Well done.
You might try A paper called Legion Stonehenge White, 120 lb, 320 gsm. It should give you very smooth results, and it accepts layering…

Cheryl, I actually think this turned out really well! The overall form is solid, the highlights are nicely placed, and the colors make the apple feel vibrant and fresh. I don’t think the empty spots are a big issue. A lot of that can come from the paper texture, especially when using a sketchbook paper that’s not designed for colored pencils.… Read more

Fried egg
Testing my new polychromos and toned tan paper. Great pencils. I followed the tutorial but not sure if I picked the right colors, some of them look a bit off. The proportion is also a bit off (compared to the reference image).

All broken eggs are not created equal

Cheryl, this looks really good! I actually think the colors work very well on the toned paper, and the egg already looks quite realistic. The yolk has a nice smooth transition, and the crispy edges are looking great. I wouldn’t worry too much about matching every color perfectly. As you practice more, choosing the right color combinations… Read more

@cheryl has always a nice drawing. You’re right about the color choice. Maybe some more contrast would have been better. About the proportions I don’t know. They all look different, so it’s your own interpretation. I think we should some time let go the fact that we really stick to the reference photo. I learned it from sketching. I will give it… Read more

I think you’ve done a great job with this. The egg already looks very appetizing, and I especially like the soft transitions in the egg white and the glossy highlight on the yolk.

Light Bulb
got some gray craft paper (125gsm) to try on. Not sure what the white pencil is in this tutorial (https://academy.ahrstudios.com/realtime-tutorials/dc1/) . It looks like chalk but I was having trouble layering chalk on graphite, so I’m not sure.
I was having issue doing the outline without grid so decided to use grid.-
Well Done !!

@cheryl This is very impressive. Very good shadows, nice glass and socket looks really metallic. I’m impressed. On grey craft paper was probably a challenge. I used a gelly roll pen on some areas’s on mine. BTW got the LANGUO erasers and they work very good. Thanks again for the tip. 👏

Cheryl, this looks beautiful! 😊 The transparency of the glass is excellent, and you’ve done a great job capturing the subtle reflections. The white pencil used in the tutorial is **Pitt Pastel**. It works very well over graphite for those bright highlights.
I also think using the grid was a good decision if it helped you get the outline… Read more1 -

Cheryl, don’t be too hard on yourself. 😊I actually think this turned out really well. The overall shape is accurate, and I can see that you’re starting to understand how to build colors in layers. Blending with colored pencils takes time to master, so what you’re experiencing is completely normal. My biggest suggestion would be to use… Read more
