coloured pencils
I’ve been looking at coloured pencils. Will 60 set of polychromos be enough in general? Or should I look at a cheaper range with more colors? There are so many different brands to choose from too.
Or maybe I should buy a small set / single pencil from each brand and see if the price is worth it?I currently have Marco Raffine which is…

My two cents @cheryl , you should look for oil based or wax based ones if you want to be able to layer, mixing, blending etc….Myself tried cheap ones but was very disappointed. So I went for Polychromos 36 set. So far so good. I’m doing the avocado 🥑 tutorial drawing and have enough of them to complete it.

Great question, Cheryl! 😊 A set of 60 Polychromos pencils is more than enough for almost every project. I always recommend investing in better quality over a larger number of lower quality pencils. You can always add individual colors later as your collection grows. Your Marco Raffine pencils are a great place to start, so there’s no rush…

Bubbles
Found some really old black cardboard so decided to try this. I didn’t know normal color pencils work on black paper ! 😂 However, the layering and blending is not great with these pencils.
Paper: some random 200gsm black cardboard
Pencils: Marco Raffine Color 7100View more comments-
Very creative Cheryl. Your bubbles look so real and eye catching. Great color blending.🎶

Looks very great. Didn’t know neither that you could use color pencils on black. Tried once on grey and had a hell of a time. So I thought white charcoal is the way to go on black cardboard. Very nice. 👏

Glass of Water
I keep saying I’ll take a brake from drawing because I have other stuff to take care of but I feel I have to draw every night now. Here’s another one
Pencils: Faber Castell Pitt Graphite Matt ( last set to try for now)
Paper: Strathmore Sketch Series 300, 74gsm, not fond of this paper but it’s relatively cheap, its just a bit too thinAgain, I…

Cheryl, this looks fantastic! You’re improving with every tutorial, and it really shows. The transparency of the glass, the reflections, and the water level are all beautifully captured. I also think the overall values are much cleaner and more controlled than before. As for the jelly roll pen, I don’t think it’s overdone. If anything, just… Read more

Very nice! I love it. I should try drawing one again—I did one some time ago. You always inspire me with the drawing tutorials you choose. In the meantime, my lantern drawing is driving me crazy. Maybe I should take a break. 😄

Soda Can Tutorial
Not very happy with the can lid but I have tried to fix so many times. It looks ok overall
Pencils: Mars Lumograph black 100B – quite scratchy and noisy, but feels nice to draw with
Paper: cheap paper from homeware store (160gsm but feels a bit rough, hard to erase. Erasing picks up the paper materials)
Note: Got the languo erasers “Painting…View more comments-

Very well drawn Cheryl, and thanks for the info on supplies.😊

Ja ziet er heel realistisch uit!👍🏼

Stunning. Your lid is perfect also. Well done. I will check out the languo erasers. Thank you for the suggestion.

Cheryl, I think this turned out really well!
Crushed cans are surprisingly challenging because every reflection changes with each dent, but you’ve captured the metallic look beautifully. Don’t be too hard on yourself. The reflections, contrast, and overall form all work very well together.
And thank you for sharing your thoughts on the paper… Read more1 - View more comments

Paper Questions
1. Toned Paper
I found quite a few tutorials use toned paper. How will they go on plain paper? Toned paper is quite expensive here and not sure if I’m ready to draw on them.2. Neenah Vellum Bristol Cardstock
“LIGHTWEIGHT WHITE CARDSTOCK: Vellum Bristol cardstock offers a slightly textured, toothy surface making it ideal for lightweight…

Can’t really help you @cheryl . I tried once gray toned paper from Clairefontaine 180gsm to color pencil draw a fried egg and turn out that I couldn’t handle the paper with standard colored pencils. Didn’t have the polychromos. Couldn’t build layers. Somebody here on the forum even suggested me to use POSCA pencils ( Acrylic) for more…

Hi Cheryl 😊
Great questions! You can absolutely create beautiful graphite drawings on plain white paper, so don’t feel like you need toned paper to achieve realistic results. Toned paper is simply another option and is often used when artists want to work with both dark and white media. Between the two Neenah papers, I would choose the… Read more1- View 2 replies

Graphite pencil Course Final Portrait
Hi all, finally finished the whole course, this is the final protrait and a few extra photos to show the progression.
I lost patience in the end for a lot of details and I think the fixative spray ruined a few places (maybe I sprayed too much…)
I’m quite happy with the result and learnt a lot during the process.View more comments-
Well done. I don’t know when i will get to this project, but it makes me nervous and excited at the same time. It looks real. I don’t know the reference pic, so i don’t know whether the difference in eye shading is on the reference, but as a complete novice that is the only part of the pic I was wondering about. Well done 👏🏼 I hope I will be…

Cheryl, congratulations on finishing the entire course! 🎉😊
Looking through your progress photos is honestly one of my favorite parts. It’s amazing to see how the portrait gradually came to life, layer by layer. The final result is something you should be very proud of. The eyes are especially striking, and the values throughout the face create… Read more1- View 2 replies

Very nice progress Cheryl. It is nice to see the comparison of the two drawings👍

very nice progress, keep it up!

Cheryl, this is exactly why I always encourage students to keep their old drawings.
The improvement over 85 days is very noticeable. The newer eye has cleaner values, better eyelash placement, stronger contrast, and a much more realistic iris. Even the overall form feels more confident and controlled.
It’s easy to miss our own progress when… Read more2- View 1 reply

Completed Final Still Life Drawing
From the pencil course. I wanted to make some places darker but can’t seem to be possible. Maybe it’s the paper, it’s a bit grainy. I think there are a lot of room for improvements, but I’m quite happy with the result for my skill level.
I’m not sure if I will work on the next (final portrait drawing) as I don’t have the right paper.…-

@cheryl I love your drawing. You’re right it is something that is sometimes overlooked, the cost of drawig materials. Pencils, drawing paper, stumps, blenders, erasers,….. They aren’t cheap neither in my country and if you want branded ones you have to pay for it. I can”t always afford it to be honnest being on dissability income.… Read more

Cheryl, I think you’re being a little harder on yourself than this drawing deserves. 😊
This is a very challenging still life because every object brings a different texture and set of problems to solve. Looking at the finished piece, I can clearly see the progress you’ve made throughout the course. The guitar, vase, flowers, butterfly, fruit,… Read more1- View 1 reply

Quick sketch today
Looks ok on paper but terrible in a photo when zoomed in 😂
I’m not sure how to do the tennis ball texture.
Reference: https://share.google/Jmc6RiVKanm3r0CtJ-
Hi Cheryl, your tennis balls look great. The texture you gave them looks like real tennis balls. I think if you used a stump on the shadows it would make the texture disappear and make them a smooth shadow.👍

They look real. Nice job.
2 -
Cheryl, don’t be so hard on yourself.
For a quick sketch, these tennis balls read very clearly, and the shadows are doing a nice job of grounding them on the page. The blending of the shadows is actually a very good idea and helps create a much softer, more realistic look.
Nice exercise, and definitely not “terrible” at all 😉1

Final Still Life Drawing
Started it today. Didn’t have a bigger paper so it’s 20cm x 30cm (2cm x 2cm squares). I feel the paper is a bit too thin ( Strathmore Sketch 300 series, 50lb. ), the guitar strings feel a bit ruined after the indention tool, but we shall see.
This is probably going to take at least a few days!-
Looking good so far.
2 -
Cheryl, this is looking very promising already! 😊
Your grid transfer looks clean, and the proportions seem well placed. Taking the time to get the outline right at this stage will make the rendering process much easier later on. Regarding the paper, 50 lb is definitely on the lighter side for a project like this, so just be a little gentle… Read more
