Studio Community 4 months agoHello! <3
Hi artists! I had some free time and decided to revisit one of the very first drawings I made with Ali 🙂
Looking at it now, I can really see how much progress I’ve made. Even though I still have a long way to go before I reach the skill level that will fully satisfy me, the improvement over these past 3–4 months has been huge!
Let me know what…

hahahahah Be carfulll he is watchin´you… very nice draw

Great drawing. The one on the right, the cheeks and chin looks a bit wider. Both are good in their own way. Left drawing proportions are spot on. Right drawing has great details in the skin texture.

Hi Anastasia, I am assuming that the drawing on the left is your new drawing. I think you have made great progress on your proportions. I do feel that the skin color on the face could be a little lighter and with a little brighter highlights. 😊

That’s soo nice! I’m a advanced young artist who’s not done art in a while, but I feel like this is amazing! Your improvements are outstanding, keep going 😄

Ik heb eindelijk ook weer iets te delen, heb behoorlijk zitten twijfelen waaraan ik zou beginnen, grafiet of pastel?
Je ziet hier wat het geworden is!

Hi Annemie, this is a wonderful drawing. The fur is so life like, it makes me want to reach out and touch the softness.👍😊

Larry, zoals altijd, bedankt voor je lieve reactie!😅

Wonderful job on fur. Nice glassy eye.

Geweldig gedaan! 👏🦒

Studio Community 4 months agoWork in progress - Wednesday
I’m about halfway through this portrait. The hair took quite a bit of patience, especially creating the highlights by lifting graphite with an eraser. It was challenging, but I’m happy with how it’s turning out.
Right now I’m focusing on the skin tones and contrasts, carefully building the shadows and highlights to bring out the facial features…

very good !!

Very nicely done Sedith. This looks like it could be challenging to draw.

Is in elk geval heel duidelijk te zien wie dit is! Nu al heel realistisch 👌😁

Great work on the shadows on left side of face and hair as well.

Horse pic stuck in starting gate...
What do you do when you get a long way into a drawing but feel disheartened because it’s not looking the way you want it to look? Do you persist and keep going, or face facts, give up and move on to something else? I have spent a long time on the horse so far (maybe halfway) and then have walked away from it as the tiny hairs were too…

Hi Nicole
Your horse is taking shape very well especially the details on the harness. Don’t get discouraged, this is an opportunity for you to spred your wings and develope new artistic technics. I think most artist have experienced this same dilemma.
I have had that happen a few times and when I have erased my mistakes so many times that my…

Great looking horse so far. Practice what you want to do and come back to it another day. You’ll figure it out.!

Nicole, my advice would be to keep going. 😊
What you’re experiencing is incredibly common, especially when you’re working on a piece that matters to you. In fact, many artists reach a stage where they stop seeing the drawing as a whole and only see the flaws.
Looking at your horse, I don’t see a drawing that needs to be abandoned. I see… Read more- View 1 reply

Studio Community 4 months agoRealistic Eye Drawing for Beginners
I completely messed up this one. So frustated that I willingly forced myself the other way around and sketch, not really draw based on a painting in less then 15 minutes. I took my hands off at just 15 minutes to complete this sketch of a well known artist. I decided to share both with the community. Failures are part of the learning process…

Great practice Frederic. Failure is one of our great teachers. I figure if I’m not failing a little along the way, I am not learning anything new.

Studio Community 4 months agoThis course is perfect and here's why
Someone once told me not to overcomplicate drawing, and I have always kept that advice in mind. When I enrolled in this course, I expected it to be filled with complicated lessons, but it was not like that at all.
Most of what I learned came from observing how Teacher Ali approached his sketches and from completing the exercises myself. This…

Kim, thank you so much for your kind words. ❤️
Reading this made my day. What makes me happiest is not the drawing itself, but seeing you understand the principles behind it and apply them on your own. That’s the real goal of the course. Your final still life project turned out beautifully. Thank you for trusting me as your teacher. I’m… Read more

📢 New Timeline Feature Added!
A few months ago, Larry asked if there was a way to view only a member’s posts and drawings without having to scroll through the entire community feed
At first, I considered adding a simple filter button to display a member’s posts. However, I decided to take it a step further and build a full Timeline feature instead. I’m happy to say…

Great update, Ali, this is a really useful and thoughtful improvement! The Timeline feature will make it much easier for members to follow their own and other’s artistic journey and keep track of their posts and drawings over time.
One small note: the Connections submenu seems not to be visible under Profile at the moment.

Studio Community 4 months agoQuestion about erasing techniques for dark graphite hair
Hi Ali,
I’m working on the Wednesday portrait and I’ve run into a problem in the darkest hair sections. At this stage, I’m applying a very dark 8B graphite layer and then trying to lift out individual hair strands with an eraser.
The issue is that I can barely remove any graphite once the dark layer is down. Interestingly, a…

Hi Edit,
Great question. Based on what you’ve described, I don’t think the problem is the 8B pencil itself. In my experience, the most common cause is actually the paper.
Very smooth technical papers tend to hold the graphite on the surface differently. When a heavy 8B layer is applied, especially if it has been burnished or compressed… Read more6- View 3 replies
