I tried to go darker, but no matter how many times I go over the paper with my charcoal pencil, it just doesn’t work. When I go over the black with my brush, it actually gets lighter… I need to try a different technique. Do you have any ideas?

Dear Martin, I am also a new student, I has similar experience, what I did with the blending is, go extremely light and slow gradually increase pressure ,covering small areas at a time, see if that will help.

Hi Martin, that is looking pretty good. You might try using graphite powder on the back ground and on the face itself.
The “Elderly Old Man” exercise shows great ways to use graphite powder. I used 8B powder and it really worked good. Ali shows several ways to use the graphite powder through out the whole exercise, and they all worked wonderfully.

Hi Martin 😊
I see the issue. Your paper is getting saturated, so adding more charcoal won’t go darker.
Try this. Build your darks in layers, but stop blending too much with the brush. The brush lifts graphite and charcoal, which is why it looks lighter.
Instead, press slightly more in the final layers and use a sharper pencil for deeper… Read more1- View 1 reply

Hi Martin
Great job on the face, beard and pipe. I think if the hair was more refined it would be an awesome, awesome drawing.👍😊

Hoi Martin, ik ben het eens met Larry, kijk nog eens goed of je iets meer met het haar kunt doen dat zou het zoveel realistischer maken, de rest heb je heel goed gedaan👊🏼

It’s immediately recognizable as Emma Watson; great job! I think there are some issues with certain facial proportions, for example, the forehead area seems too wide compared to the rest of the face, and there’s a disproportionate size to both eyes. I think the grid technique is incredibly useful; it allows you to achieve the proportions…

Hi Martin
Can you post your reference picture along side your drawing? That will make it easy to see where the difference is.

Hi Martin
You might check out the exercises on the “Pencil Drawing Masterclass” in the Academy. There is an exercise on Drawing Hair and also the Final Portrait exercise, which is excellent for proportions, shading and facial details.
I hope this is helpful for you.

Martin this is such a powerful concept… wow. 😮✨
The way you’ve blended realism with the cracked glass effect is seriously impressive, especially that eye it pulls you in instantly.
If I can suggest one small thing, try pushing the contrast a bit more around the cracks so they feel even sharper and more “cutting” against the skin. But… Read more2- View 1 reply

I did my best. It’s very hard to capture the details and the correct tones. I drew back and forth using different pencils… I still need to work on my approach.

Hello guys , I have a problem figuring out where exactly to place my light, mid, and dark tones when shading. How can I learn this, or how do I identify it correctly?
Right now I’m using pencils ranging from 8B to 14B, but I’m not really getting the results I want. I’d really appreciate any tips.
Thanks in advance!

Hey guys, I’m still having trouble identifying light, mid, and dark tones. What’s the best way to figure them out? And which H and B pencils would you recommend for shading this kind of drawing? I’d appreciate any tips—I’ll show you my final result afterwards.

Very nice Martin
My guess is that Ali will answer all your questions in detail.👍

I would use hb, 2b, or a soft and hard use of 4b,6b for skin 8b or charcoal for eyebrow,hb, 4b, 6b for lips, 4b,6b,8b for helmet definitely pressure control plays a big role

4b, 6b and 9b, the last one for the deepter shadow but it is also about layering and the blending/tissue on fingertip. You can bring the light back with erasing.

Nice progress Martin 😊
The face structure and the eyes are working really well. You captured a nice expression. Drawing the leaves on the face can definitely be tricky, so don’t worry.
Try lightly sketching the leaf shapes first and then slowly build the shading around them. That will help them sit more naturally on the skin.
You’re improving.… Read more2- View 1 reply
