Studio Community 5 months agoThree point perspective
So far in this course, I’ve had nothing but fun, and I hadn’t done a class that wasn’t exciting to draw—until now! The three-point perspective assignment was very frustrating, and my lines were all over the place. I even started seeing lines that weren’t there. It got to the point where I stopped looking at the reference video, and around…

Very well done Nelisha. I especially like your red pop can. You are creating your own style.👍😊

There are still so many things I need to improve… What does hyper-realistic actually mean? Is my drawing heading in the right direction? What else do I need to improve to make it look truly realistic? I appreciate every piece of criticism. Thank you.

Hi Martin
Is this one of Ali’s exercises? I f so, I would say watch the exercise again and see what you might have missed. I think your drawing is very good but could use some detailed refinement. When I watch Ali’s exercises I try to copy every stroke he makes, and listen intently to every word he speaks. Sometimes I watch the exercise over…

This is such a striking and imaginative piece.
What especially caught my attention is the cracked texture on the shoulder and the palette-knife-like marks. I actually zoomed in to study them and try to figure out how you created those effects.
The composition, the dramatic lighting, and those haunting eyes all work beautifully together. 👏1- View 3 replies

Hi Martin
I haven’t read the other comments so maybe I’m telling you something you already know. Sorry.
Hyper realism is when the contrast is very high in the details of the drawing. For example: add more darkness to the lips on your drawing underneath the white areas. Then add some (skin)lines above the white part of the lip.
If you have done…

Studio Community 5 months agoThrough the eyes
Finished this tutorial piece in about 4 hours. 👍
I really enjoyed working on the eyelashes, contrasts, and the texture around the eye. I’m still struggling a bit with the eraser work though, I can’t yet get the lines as thin and as bright white as I would like. But I know that’s something that comes with more practice and control. 😊View more comments-

I had a really good laugh reading your post, there were quite a lot of events packed into just a few sentences. 😁
I’m actually working on this one too, just a little behind you at the moment. But thanks to your trip and the wedding — which thankfully isn’t yours 😂 — I think I might finish mine before you do. 🤣

I agree with Anemie, you should try something easier. Can you show us other drawings ? I won’t be able to draw this ine neither.
-
Don’t get discouraged. I too want to jump right in and start drawing a really realistic picture but Annemie has great advice! I am starting from the beginning so I understand the techniques used. That way I don’t get frustrated because I really love art. Be patient, practice and hopefully you will enjoy the process.

Don’t be discouraged. I completely understand your ambition, but drawing hands is probably one of the hardest challenges in realistic drawing, even for professionals. ❤
Like others already mentioned, try choosing simpler subjects at first, because those will give you real feelings of success and help build confidence. Once you start practicing… Read more - View more comments

Studio Community 5 months agoAll or Nothing: Is This It?
For years, I struggled to find something that truly fulfilled me. I worked as a paralegal VA, a thumbnail editor, and even tried learning programming, but no matter what I did, I always lost interest and felt empty after a while.
Last month, I enrolled my child in a coloring class using ordinary crayons. I tried it myself, and…

Good on you Kim, I’ve always wanted to have the time to draw, having just retired in Feb, I now have that time to hone my skills and by the end of the year I will hold my own classes, set yourself a goal as looking at your image, you certainly have the talent. Pick a niche, like mine will be wild life, I used to do portraits, but I really hated…

Kim, I totally understand how you are feeling. For over 20 years I was a teacher, it wasn’t until this past year I found that I was actually passionate about drawing. I found myself going to bed after 1 am practicing drawing and having so much fun. I go to bed, anticipating my next lesson in the morning. It doesn’t matter what age you find…

Hi Kim, you have another very well drawn exercise. The reward of drawing gets stronger and better with every new completed exercise.👍

Kim, that is an excellent drawing. I’m glad you found something you are excited about! I was always in awe of artists that could draw such realistic pictures with just a pencil. I’m glad to be learning myself and being part of this community that Ali has established.! Hope you will always find joy in art!

Studio Community 5 months agoGraphite Pencils Tutorial Library, lesson 2 of 102, does anyone have the reference downloads from this lesson, they are not downloading from the material list, some sort of error. I would really appreciate it if someone could upload them here for me. Thanks in advance😀
-
Hi Ronald, Could you share a screenshot of the error you’re getting when you try to download the references? That will help me identify the problem and see what’s causing it.
-
Here it is as you can see the download is a web page, when I copy the URL and past it into google, I get an error 404

Studio Community 5 months agoProject 1 complete, took me about 7 hours, but that’s a lot quicker than I’ve been able to finish my work previously, I’ve been looking for someone that uses this method, and now I’m happy, I hope you all like it.

Beautifully done. 🤩
The fur texture is very well rendered, and the contrast between the soft animal features and the detailed butterfly works wonderfully. The eye and whiskers are especially nicely handled. ⭐
Great practice piece with excellent attention to detail. 👍
