Edith, this is absolutely beautiful.
I love the calm atmosphere you’ve created. The wood grain, the subtle reflections, and the smooth transitions in value give the violin a wonderful sense of realism. It’s one of those drawings that invites you to stop and look a little longer.
If I could suggest one small thing, I’d add just a touch… Read more -
Hi @SEDITH Edith, I thought I had commented on this masterpiece, but apparently not. So let me do it right away : What a beautiful piece. The soft transitions in the wood grain, the subtle highlights, and the deep, rich blacks create such a peaceful and timeless atmosphere. You really captured the elegance of the violin, and your patience shows…

Dandelion
Work and painting have both been quite demanding lately, and after several challenging portraits I felt like creating something lighter. This dandelion with its resting water droplet was exactly that, a calm, quick, and refreshing piece to draw. Sometimes the simplest subjects are the most restorative.

Beautiful work, and I hope creating this was relaxing 💙

Beautiful work @SEDITH . I really like the idea of returning to a simple subject after tackling more demanding portraits. The water droplet is exceptionally well rendered, with stunningly realistic reflections. It’s a great reminder that sometimes the simplest subjects can be the most rewarding to create—and to admire. Brilliant IMHO 👏💧

Stress
Graphite and pastel chalk mixed-media artwork. The circular patterns were created using stencils: highlights were lifted from the dark areas with an eraser, while graphite was brushed onto the lighter sections. The colored tones were built up from finely scraped pastel dust applied with a brush.

Incredibly expressive piece. The emotion comes through so clearly, well done! 👏

Gewéldig gedaan 👏

Edit, this is such a powerful piece. 😊 The emotion comes through immediately, and I really like how you’ve combined graphite with pastel to create something unique. The circular patterns add a strong sense of movement without distracting from the expression, and your explanation of the process is just as interesting as the… Read more

Finished at last
I’ve just completed this portrait.
What took the most time wasn’t the details themselves, but building the subtle value transitions throughout the face. I tried to keep the shifts between light and shadow as soft as possible while using the dark background to create stronger contrast and focus.
The hair texture and the fabric of the jacket were…

Very well drawn Sedith. You have a very handsome son.😊

The texture in that suit👌

Edit, this turned out beautifully.
The soft transitions across the face are exactly what make this portrait feel so convincing. Nothing feels forced, and the dark background does a great job of drawing attention to the expression. The hair and jacket textures are handled with a lot of restraint, which helps keep the focus where it belongs.… Read more1- View 4 replies

Oliver
I’m working on a portrait of my son, and I think I’m about halfway through. Right now, it’s still not a drawing I enjoy looking at… at this stage, all I can see are the mistakes and unfinished parts. But every time I work on it, it improves a little, gaining another layer and another detail. I hope that one day I’ll look back at this stage…

Hi Sedith, very nice progress. I understand your feelings at this stage of the drawing.
I am currently drawing a portrait of my daughter. What an experience, i have used every eraser in my arsenal and still not satisfied with the results.

@SEDITH What stands out to me most at this stage is how strong the foundation already is. Looking at this stage, I don’t see a portrait struggling with mistakes—And I have to admit, I’m a little jealous of your talent! 😊 The level of observation, patience, and control you’re showing here is impressive, and it’s already shaping up to be a… Read more

My graphite portrait of Wednesday is finished
I chose this subject because of the character’s calm, reserved nature and her unmistakable gaze. While working on the drawing, I focused especially on the delicate details of the hair, and the subtle tonal transitions. Another study that was both a technical challenge and a pleasure to create.

Work in progress - Wednesday
I’m about halfway through this portrait. The hair took quite a bit of patience, especially creating the highlights by lifting graphite with an eraser. It was challenging, but I’m happy with how it’s turning out.
Right now I’m focusing on the skin tones and contrasts, carefully building the shadows and highlights to bring out the facial features…

Question about erasing techniques for dark graphite hair
Hi Ali,
I’m working on the Wednesday portrait and I’ve run into a problem in the darkest hair sections. At this stage, I’m applying a very dark 8B graphite layer and then trying to lift out individual hair strands with an eraser.
The issue is that I can barely remove any graphite once the dark layer is down. Interestingly, a…

Hi Edit,
Great question. Based on what you’ve described, I don’t think the problem is the 8B pencil itself. In my experience, the most common cause is actually the paper.
Very smooth technical papers tend to hold the graphite on the surface differently. When a heavy 8B layer is applied, especially if it has been burnished or compressed… Read more6- View 3 replies

Finished
After many hours of work, my drawing of Michelangelo’s David is finally complete. This piece challenged my patience, especially with the marble texture, the subtle transitions of light and shadow, and the intricate curls of the hair. Every session added a few more details until the sculpture gradually emerged from the paper. On to the next drawing…
